Two men and a woman were arrested Friday, Sept. 17, after a brief car chase that started at Kmart on Mount Hermon Road in Scotts Valley.

The pursuit started when Kmart workers chased Steven Northcutt, a suspected shoplifter, into the parking lot at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Scotts Valley Police Department.

Northcutt ran to the driver’s seat of his Nissan Sentra, where his girlfriend and a friend were waiting, but he was hailed by a Scotts Valley police officer, police said. As the officer walked up to the car, Northcutt hit the gas and fled west on Mount Hermon Road.

The officer lost sight of the car before finding it empty in the middle of Ryder Road. All three people were found hiding in the woods nearby and were arrested, police said.

Northcutt, a 29-year-old parolee from San Jose, is suspected of stealing a sex toy and two packs of T-shirts from Kmart. He was arrested on suspicion of felony evasion, commercial burglary, conspiracy and a parole hold, according to police.

Northcutt’s girlfriend, Amber Yarnell, 19, a San Jose resident on probation, is suspected of stealing Playboy lingerie and was carrying a hidden knife. She was arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary, conspiracy, possession of a concealed weapon and probation violation.

Both Northcutt and Yarnell were under the influence of methamphetamine, police said.

Police say David Becerra, 22, of San Mateo County, also on probation, acted as the lookout for his friends while they were inside Kmart. He was also under the influence of methamphetamine.

Becerra turned over several shaved keys, commonly used to steal cars, that had been secreted in his underwear, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of narcotics, a probation violation, conspiracy and carrying burglary tools.

Seriously!? Sex toys at K-mart? This has to be a typo or someone at the Press Banner having some fun. No way. They won't even carry music with curse words. I'm going to be scratching my head all day over this.

AND if all of us in Felton are crackheads, I would like to direct SV Resident to this very paper's Dispatch section where it appears that Scotts Valley are all a bunch drunks. Makes us happy funtime neighbors, no?

You say most of the thiefs don't live in SV and you seem to also think that people who shop at "SnobHill" are snobs? Even if that were true I'd say welcome to the club.

Scotts valley its lame there is nothing to do and it sucks that all the shopping has to be done elsewhere... Over the hill to San Jose, Santa Cruz or Watsonville.

Safeway produce is old and overpriced, Snobhill well the name says it all. Scotts Valley Market same thing but worse than Snobhill, Kmart is lame and people buy there because they have no choice.

we need better businesses.

A thief is a thief regardless of the location or kind of business, if they see or think they have a chance they will go for it.

besides most of them don't even live in SV they are coming from other places like Santa Cruz, Felton, Bonny Doon, Boulder Creek... Bunch of Crackheads...

And Big Box stores are magnets for petty criminals looking for opportunities. Just look at the number of crimes committed at the Mall. Do we really want that for Scotts Valley.

Illogical conclusion. Criminals are opportunist. It has nothing to do with big box stores.

Just the kind of trouble a big box store attracts. Thank goodness Target didn't get built in Scotts Valley.
