Why This Empty Nester Still Gives to SVEF

I’m still getting used to this “empty nester” description as we recently moved our youngest daughter into her new home, aka dorm. While our daughters have graduated from Scotts Valley High School, my husband and I are continuing to donate to the Scotts Valley Educational Foundation (SVEF) to invest in local students, our community’s future and (more selfishly) our home value. SVEF funds library and student support staff salaries at all four Scotts Valley public schools, positions vital to student success.

We believe Scotts Valley kids deserve strong schools. Despite SVUSD receiving less per-student funding than most California districts, our local schools consistently rank in the top 10% statewide. And for those of us fortunate enough to be homeowners, studies show high-performing schools are linked to home values 10-20% higher than communities with average-performing schools. Giving through SVEF supports both strong schools and home values across the community.

This year, SVEF and all four SV public school parent organizations have partnered on the Give Where You Live Direct Donation Drive to raise $395,000 — funding school-specific programs through the parent organizations, plus district-wide library and student support staff through SVEF. Please consider donating at svef.net/donate.

Thank you to everyone who’s already contributed. Best wishes for a great school year and a successful campaign for our students, schools and community.
