Winter brings leadership to Fire Board race
Some people lead by laughter, using humor to help us see things we had not noticed. Others lead by words, speaking truth so clearly it cannot be ignored, and pointing a way forward. Others lead by example, always being the first to help when needed and inspiring others to join in.
In my neighborhood, we are fortunate to have many such inspiring leaders. Nancy Gerdt, with Michele Mosher, shepherded the building of the Felton Library, which has become a center for community and educational events and the native garden. Lea Watson teaches ceramics to anyone interested in learning, while modeling kindness and caring. Eugenia and Eric Rice host international parties to get everyone dancing in the street. Loren and Stacie Fontinell host July 4 parties where we catch up with those returning to visit parents and grandparents. Christy Shults has helped the FFPD build its website and newsletter. James Conerly is teaching us how to use radios to communicate in case of an emergency, and Lola Britton sings joyfully at protests. Clara and Kevin Elliott reach out to neighbors with children and send their boys as ambassadors, and provide energy and technical expertise to those of us who can no longer keep up with the changes.
We have women who fight fires, men who are great fathers, those who are caregivers and others who are always ready to talk and share ideas. Others are artists, creating beauty.
We all know so many good people, it is sometimes hard to know who to vote for when an election forces us to choose. I hope that when it is time to choose someone to serve on the Board of the Felton Fire Protection District, your first choice will be Craig Winter.
While all of the incumbents have served our community and led us to our current happy place of being able to keep local control of our fire department, and two of the four on the ballot will be elected, Craig’s leadership is important for several reasons. As the Firewise leader for the Forest Lakes neighborhood, he has shown incredible energy and organizational abilities. The key to preparedness for future disasters is to have someone on the Board act as a liaison to the Firewise communities.
As a Board member, he has also shown an ability to work well with the FFPD Board and Fire Chief to push for the vision we all just voted for in the Fire Assessment. He will be a key factor in providing oversight and accountability to ensure that vision is realized.
