San Lorenzo Way Bridge closes for preparation work
San Lorenzo Way Bridge will be closed to all traffic from Sept. 15 through Oct. 9 while crews remove trees and prepare for the bridge’s eventual replacement.
The bridge, located at the intersection of Highway 9 and San Lorenzo Way, connects Highway 9 with San Lorenzo Way and Rose Acres Lane. The closure will remain in effect 24 hours a day throughout the work period.
The tree removal is needed to relocate utilities and prepare the site for the San Lorenzo Way Bridge Replacement Project. Bridge replacement is scheduled to begin in 2027.
Drivers traveling to San Lorenzo Way are advised to use the detour route at the southern end of Mount Hermon Road and allow extra travel time.
Project updates and detour maps are available from the Santa Cruz County Public Works Division. General inquiries can be directed to Public Works at 831-454-2160 or dp****@***************ca.gov.

County updates El Niño preparedness resources
County of Santa Cruz has updated its El Niño resource page to help residents prepare for winter weather and stay informed as conditions develop.
The update comes during National Preparedness Month in September as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts call for a potentially strong El Niño this fall and winter. In California, strong El Niño conditions can increase the potential for heavy rain, flooding, landslides, large waves and coastal erosion, although impacts vary from one event to another.
The county’s resource page includes information on household and property preparedness, CruzAware emergency alerts and evacuation zones, sand and sandbag locations, drainage and erosion preparation, road and highway conditions, power outages, animal evacuation, flood cleanup and disaster assistance. Resources are available in English and Spanish where provided.
Residents are encouraged to prepare before severe weather arrives by clearing gutters and drainage systems, assembling emergency kits, signing up for CruzAware and learning evacuation routes.
More information is available at santacruzcountyca.gov/living/elnino.aspx.
