Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter officers rescued 34 dogs from “deplorable and inhumane conditions” last week at a Scotts Valley residence on Crescent Court.
The investigation into the case was continuing this week, and there were no arrests as of Tuesday.
The dogs, a majority of which were Boston terriers, plus some Tibetan Spaniels, and one Chihuahua mix, were examined by an animal shelter veterinarian and kept in protective custody, held as evidence.
The shelter had been alerted to the animals’ plight by a concerned citizen.
Animal shelter officers were familiar with the address due to previous complaints of dogs being bred at the location.
The officers acted on a Superior Court warrant, and were assisted by the Scotts Valley Police Department.
The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office is working with the animal shelter and Scotts Valley police to investigate the case.
The county shelter this week published a plea for donations to care for the animals, as some of the dogs were likely to have veterinary complications.
Donations to the shelter’s Extra Mile fund can be made through www.scanimalshelter.org/donate.
