The Falcons’ 2010 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League season began with a
9-0 thumping of visiting St. Francis High School.
Scotts Valley controlled the tempo the entire match and was led by Jordin Carlson and Emily Payne, who scored two goals each in the first half.
The Falcons faced Aptos on Thursday, Jan. 7, after Press-Banner press time and will play again at Harbor High at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12
San Lorenzo Valley
The team opened league play with a 2-2 tie against Harbor High on Jan. 5.
For the Cougars, Chere Garcia scored on a penalty shot before halftime, and Lacey Monack gave SLV a 2-1 lead before Harbor tied the game in the 78th minute.
The Cougars played at Robert Luis Stevenson High School on Thursday and hosted Harker High School on Friday, Jan. 8. Results of those games were not available at press time.
The Cougars will resume league play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Aptos High.
Boys soccer
San Lorenzo Valley
After a 3-1 loss to Sacred Heart Prep on Jan. 2, the Cougars fell to Harbor High, 4-2, on Jan. 6 to open the SCCAL season.
The team resumes league play Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Aptos High, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
Scotts Valley
With all the scoring coming in the first half, the Falcon boys defeated St. Francis High, 4-1, in their league opener.
Alex Boostani, Aaron Liang, Zack Curtis and Connor Reed scored for the Falcons, who will play North Monterey County in a nonleague game Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Scotts Valley before traveling to Harbor High at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, to play the Pirates in a league contest.
Girls basketball
Scotts Valley
After falling to Aptos High, 66-53, in its SCCAL opener on Jan. 5, the Falcons traveled to play at SLV on Thursday after press time.
Scotts Valley finished 10-1 in the preseason before falling to Aptos.
The Falcons will continue league play Wednesday, Jan. 13, as they host Soquel High at 5:30 p.m.
San Lorenzo Valley
After a 7-4 preseason, the team opened league play against rival Scotts Valley on Thursday after press time. SLV has been led by senior forward Sierra Clark, who averages 15 points per game.
The Cougars will continue league play at Santa Cruz at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Boys basketball
San Lorenzo Valley
Blake Bechtel scored 16 and Luke Roberts chipped in 14 points as the Cougars won their final preseason game over Gonzales High, 71-36, on Jan. 2.
They opened league play Thursday after press time against rival Scotts Valley High. Their next game will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Santa Cruz High.

The team opened the league season with a 71-48 loss to Aptos High on Jan. 5. The Falcons played rival SLV on Thursday after press time and will continue league play Wednesday, Jan. 13, as they host Soquel High at 7 p.m.
