Five boys runners — four seniors and a talented freshman — left for New York today to compete in the high school indoor track and field national championships.
Alejandro Torres, Matt Shisler, Allan Hetke, Ben Swan and freshman Cody Johnson will compete in the National Scholastic Indoor Championships at the New York Armory, an event that runs Friday through Sunday, March 12 to 14.
The boys ran in one indoor meet earlier in the season, and their times in several races qualified them for the national championships.
“They’ve been working really hard, and this is going to be a great trip for me and the boys,” head coach Rob Collins said. “It’s kind of like ‘Thank you for what you’ve done for the past four years.’”
Collins will have a team run the distance medley relay Friday and the 4-x-800-meter relay Saturday. Then Swan, Shisler and Torres will run the open 800 on Sunday, while Johnson and Hetke run the mile.
“They’re in great shape,” Collins said
The meet is the final indoor contest of the season. Outdoor track invitational meets began Feb. 26, and the league season begins Thursday, March 18.
