Cougars softball falls in second round of playoffs
The San Lorenzo Valley High girls softball team fell to Hillsdale of San Mateo 1-0 in the Central Coast Section quarterfinals Saturday, May 22.
The Cougars’ season ended with a record of 21-8, including 10-2 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.
In the loss to Hillsdale, starting pitcher Kendra Salangsang allowed one hit and one run and struck out 14 batters.
The Cougars had a single hit, by catcher Jasmine Jones, and were not able to push a run across the board.
SV middle school volleyball takes third
The Scotts Valley Middle School boys volleyball team took third place at the Santa Cruz County Middle School Invitational Volleyball Tournament at San Lorenzo Valley High School last week. In a very tight match, SVMS defeated San Lorenzo Valley Middle School, 25-16, 18-25 and 15-13. 
Earlier in the tournament, SVMS suffered its only loss to eventual champion New Brighton Middle School, 26-28, 22-25. 
The members of the team are Noah Carl, Jonathan Chiu, Scott Edwards, Bryce Fish, Cody Giguiere, Steve Lonhart, James Marshall, Collin McCann, Cole North, Ryan Rodriguez, John Ross, Ben Shaw and Brett Turner.
Vargas Academy shows well
Vargas Academy of Gymnastic Arts competed this weekend at Tumbling and Trampoline Regional Championships, winning several medals in Trampoline, Double-Mini Trampoline and Power Tumbling.
Of the 21 medals that were possible, the center claimed four gold, five silver and seven bronze medals.
