Locals finish in top 100 in wharf race
Allan Hetke of Felton and David Gonzales of Boulder Creek were the two local men to finish in the top 100 in the 38th annual Wharf to Wharf road race in Santa Cruz.
Hetke placed 66th overall in 33 minutes, 41 seconds. He was followed by Gonzales, who was 77th in 34:11.
On the women’s side, Vanessa Fraser of Scotts Valley finished 32nd in 39:03.
About 15,000 runners sign up for the race each year, and countless others run the race without officially signing up.
The overall winner was Hadrack Koshei of Kenya, who ran it in 27:01. The top American was former Aptos High star Brett Gotcher, who finished fifth in 27:58. It’s reported Gotcher is trying for the U.S. Olympic marathon team.
The top woman was Belainish Gebre of Ethiopia, who ran the course in 30:45.

Redwoods race around the corner
The 42nd annual Race Thru the Redwoods in Felton will begin at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 15. The race will start and end in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Registration is ongoing through the race’s website www.racethrutheredwoods.com. Pre-race entry is $22 and day-of-the-race entry is $30.
Trouble hold fundraiser
The Santa Cruz County-based 16-and-under girls fastpitch softball team Trouble had a successful carwash and yard sale at Mountain Mechanics in Boulder Creek on Sunday, July 25.
Owner Chris Currier allowed the team to raise money for its upcoming trip to the 2010 Amateur Softball Association girls 16B Western National Championship in Hillsboro, Ore., from Monday, Aug. 2, to Aug. 8.
The 16-and-under team is made up of players from Scotts Valley, San Lorenzo Valley, Santa Cruz, Soquel and Aptos high schools.
Players Valerie Silva, Jess Meyers, Alicia Pitts, Karlee Suba, Mariah Lindberg, Angie Hershberger, Hyllery Hershberger, Audrey Smith, Leah Viele-Vemer, Jordan Rogers, Rita McCreesh, Danica Houseman, Michelle Hitt and Ashley Price are on the team, coached by Matt Houseman, Don Meyers and Dave Rogers.
