The Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League’s season-opening football jamborees will be this weekend.
The opening contest between all the teams in the SCCAL marks the traditional start to the high school football season in Santa Cruz County.
The varsity football jamboree will begin at 6 p.m. today, Aug. 27, at Cabrillo College. Local teams from Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley highs won’t kick off their seasons until after 8 p.m., however.
Scotts Valley’s defense is scheduled to face Soquel High at 8:10 p.m., and the offense at 8:36 p.m.
SLV’s defense faces St. Francis High at 8:23 p.m. and its offense at 8:49 p.m.
The night will be capped by Scotts Valley’s offense taking the field against SLV’s defense at 9:02 p.m., followed by a matchup of SLV’s offense and Scotts Valley’s defense at 9:15 p.m.
Each team receives points for offensive and defensive accomplishments, such as first downs, touchdowns, turnovers and interceptions.
In 2009, Scotts Valley won the meaningless contest with 29 points, and SLV finished fourth with 21 points.
The junior varsity jamboree is the next day, Saturday, Aug. 28, at Santa Cruz High School. SLV will host the freshman jamboree that day with a 10 a.m. start time at the San Lorenzo Valley High School field.
