The San Lorenzo Valley High Cougars will look to rebound at Piedmont High School on Saturday, Sept. 11, after falling 24-7 to Sacred Heart Prep of Atherton in both teams’ first game of the season Sept. 4.
Against the Sacred Heart Gators, the scoring opened early in the second quarter with a thrilling 80-yard double-pass that started when quarterback Zach Newberry tossed the ball to receiver Luke Roberts, who then heaved it to wide receiver Nick Gorman. However, the trick play was all the Cougars mustered on the day.
Sacred Heart scored 24 unanswered points to win going away.
In the loss, Newberry went 12-for-25 for 233 yards. However, he also forced several throws into traffic and was intercepted twice.
Roberts was the team’s second-leading receiver, catching four passes for 108 yards, and Jared Johnson-Payne had four catches for 50 yards.
Senior defensive back Nate Wood and senior linebacker Logan Kellogg stood out with a number of strong tackles on defense.
