SV grad named MVP in Florida
2007 Scotts Valley High School graduate Amanda Reyes was named the Most Valuable Player in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season after a stellar campaign for Florida A&M University as a pitcher.
Reyes, a 5-foot, 7-inch junior, led her team to the MEAC title and led the conference in wins, games started and innings pitched while managing a meager 2.36 earned-run average.
Reyes also pitched a perfect game May 2 and was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region team in the Southeast region, which includes players from Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Florida and other major Division I programs.
Reyes’ season ended in losses to top-ranked University of Florida and Lehigh University in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament in mid-May. This is Reyes’ first season with the Rattlers after honing her skills for two years at Tallahassee Community College.
Player turns a triple play
Scotts Valley Little League Single-A Athletics third baseman Matt Cornelison turned an unassisted triple play June 6 in a game against the Giants. With the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning, Cornelison snagged a line drive to his left, tagged the runner coming from second base and kept running toward second, where he saw the runner from first base standing. Cornelison managed to tag the runner out for the rare unassisted triple play.
The A’s were unable to score in the bottom half of their inning, and the game ended as a 10-10 tie.
Golf tourney for Boys and Girls Club
The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Cruz will host the 40th annual Don Bailey Golf Tournament at DeLaveaga Golf Course on July 11. The tournament features a chance to win a new car, a closest to the pin contest and more. A barbecue meal from Billy’s Firehouse Barbeque is included for all players.
Cost is $150 per player or $600 for a foursome.
The money raised will help membership fees remain low for all youth.
