Scotts Valley Unified School District will host a series of five community forums beginning Wednesday, Nov. 3, intended to address the budget crisis facing schools.
The district has cut extra expenses and now must consider more cuts at all four of the city’s public schools. The forums, which will be all the same, will allow people to offer their input on options for cuts and possible revenue sources, such as a parcel tax. Knowledgeable individuals will present an overview of the budget shortfall, answer questions and take feedback.
Since 2007, the district has reduced its budget of $19 million by several million dollars. The result has been layoffs, loss of student programs, less maintenance and custodial support, fewer teachers and larger class sizes.
The forums are intended to let district representatives and local residents engage in a public conversation about how to handle the continuing pressure of reduced state money for schools. The district invites all interested people to participate.
