I am writing because of Scotts Valley High School’s play, “Durang & A Dollar.” I found it to be surprisingly disrespectful.
The play consisted of three quick different acts, two of which were pretty harmless and funny. The last act, however, portrayed Catholics to be stupid, mean and ignorant. It seemed to include a one-sided argument against God.
Although the beginning started out humorous, by the end the tone became very serious. In the end, four students argue with their former teacher, a nun, about how awful she was. One character blames the nun for her insanity, because she actually believed the things she had taught her.
Although the beginning was somewhat funny, it still wasn’t sensitive to people with Catholic faith. In one scene, there were questions on flashcards regarding God that the nun would read and then skip over, as if the nun was stumped and couldn’t back up her faith. From beginning to end, the script made jokes from what real Catholics believe.
You may assume I’m Catholic, but I’m not. I just feel disappointed our local high school isn’t showing genuine respect for everyone in our community. I know students and parents that feel the same as I do.
SVHS asks that its students live the D.R.E.A.M., in which “M” stands for “Model a high level of integrity and compassion.” I believe it is reasonable to argue that this play did not meet this standard. This church is a part of our community, along with many other Christian denominations that were not made fun of to the same extent, but would probably agree that the play pushed the boundaries of not showing integrity.
To those of you who still feel that this play was still not worth complaining about, I just want to make clear that SVHS could have put on a play sensitive to all of its community. I believe that SVHS is smart enough to put the best foot forward, and this isn’t it.
