EDITOR,
Carl Owens’ letter (“White-elephant fire station,” June 12, Press-Banner) is ridiculous.
After city voters rejected the plan to build the fire station the district needs so badly, the city sought alternate ways to fund the project. It is seeking a grant.
I have no idea why someone would complain about the station being paid for with a grant. Firefighters come to the rescue of our loved ones and us when we need them the most.
I had the privilege of seeing this firsthand last summer when I participated in a work-experience program with the district. What I saw was that the Erba Lane station is in dire need of replacement.
I believe that many people forget what the great firefighters of Scotts Valley actually do for us. When you dial 9-1-1 because your house is burning, they run into burning buildings to save you, Mr. Owens.
The way I see it, the least we can do to thank them is let them build a station that will make their job just that much easier and safer. I just want to say thank you to the Scotts Valley Fire District crews — you are amazing!
By the way, they aren’t at Starbucks. They are buying groceries — so I guess they won’t end up needing that coffee bar, after all.
