Work on planned improvements on Graham Hill Road near Roaring Camp is officially scheduled to begin in March after Monterey Peninsula Engineering Inc. was awarded the contract for the project, valued at not quite $2.4 million, by the Board of Supervisors at its Dec. 14 meeting.
To raise awareness of the upcoming road work, the Santa Cruz County Department of Public Works will host an open forum-style information meeting in the multipurpose room of San Lorenzo Valley High School at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18.
Senior Civil Engineer Russell Chen said public works staff would be present at the meeting, and 5th District Supervisor Mark Stone had been invited, as well.
The improvements call for increasing drivers’ margin for error on the treacherous route by widening the nearly nonexistent shoulders of the road by three feet on either side, adding a left-turn lane into Roaring Camp Railroads to eliminate illegal left turns and the abrupt traffic backups they cause and streamlining drainage to reduce the size of the deep ditches that parallel the roadway.
The improvements will be made on the existing right-of-way and will not encroach on private property, Chen said.
