Golf group starts
Valley Gardens’ senior men’s golf group has started its 2011 season.
The group, which meets Wednesday mornings at 8, welcomes new members to join for fun. The senior rate is $15.

Cougar boys surprise Harbor
Senior Nick Gorman posted a double-double for the Cougars as San Lorenzo Valley beat local power Harbor High, 54-44 Jan. 14. Gorman put in 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cougars (7-10 overall, 2-3 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League) while Luke Roberts scored nine. Harbor’s Collin Gruber scored a game-high 20 points for the Pirates, who fell to 2-2 in league play and 11-5 overall.
The SLV boys lost to host Soquel High in league play, 44-57, on Jan. 12.
Scotts Valley boys take St. Francis
The Scotts Valley boys won a tight game against St. Francis High of Watsonville on Jan. 12, taking out the Sharks 51-48. On Jan. 14 the Falcons dropped a game to the league-leading Aptos Mariners (15-1 overall, 4-0 SCCAL), 66-38. Desmond Balco scored a game-high 14 points, and Kyle Fletcher scored 13.
Scotts Valley (1-4, 7-9) next plays Tuesday, Jan. 25, at home against Soquel. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
Cougar girls hoops fall
Harbor High won its first SCCAL game of the season as it beat host San Lorenzo Valley High, 61-30, on Friday, Jan. 14. Savanna Prather was SLV’s high scorer with nine points, and teammate Leah Viele scored eight.
