Cougars open league with win
San Lorenzo Valley beat host Santa Cruz 3-1 in the Cardinals’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League opener March 17.
Relief pitcher Scott Petroskey earned the win after teammate Trent Scott drove in Tyler Gilbert and Billy Mullins. Lucas Trader also scored.
Gilbert and Santa Cruz’s Collin Ferguson each pitched a grueling nine innings but the Cougars (4-4, 2-0) came away with the win. Gilbert struck out six and walked two. Ferguson struck out five with one walk. The Cardinal massed an untimely four errors allowing one unearned run.
Falcons fall
The Falcons allowed a run off an error in a 7-6 nonleague loss to host San Mateo on March 17.
Relief pitcher Brett Levy struck out five batters in two innings of relief duty but ended up taking the loss.
Abe Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run for the Falcons. Andrew Guydish went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run and Daniel Bolanos had two hits, a run and an RBI.
The Falcons are 4-4-1.
Falcons drop Cougar tennis
Ryan Miller, Jordan Rein, Garret Hammack and Greg Ebert each won their singles matches as Scotts Valley beat visiting SLV 7-0 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play on March 17.
Falcons take down PCS lacrosse
Wesley Koenig and Collin Corbella scored four goals and made two assists each as Scotts Valley’s beat Pacific Collegiate School 12-9 in a non¬league game March 18. Eric Dunn had four saves at goalie for the Falcons.
Bethany players honored
Bethany University freshman Stephanie Pesqueira went 8-for-20 in nine games last week and was selected as the California Pacific Conference Softball Player of the Week for the dates of March 8th through 14th, 2011.
Pesqueira also pitched 23 innings for the Bruins who are 3-7 overall.
