Cougars make quick work of Pirates

The San Lorenzo Valley boys’ volleyball team rolled over the Harbor Pirates in three quick games winning 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 on April 26 at SLV High.
“They are a really young team,” SLV senior Nick Gorman said. “They will be good in the future but right now you can tell that they are young.”
Gorman led the Cougars with 13 kills, 12 assists and three blocks. Teammate Eric Lange had 11 kills with three blocks and co-captain Jared Johnson had nine kills.
Harbor struggled to gain momentum all game and their coach Matt Shutz pulled aside their middle blocker Alex York and worked with him on blocking technique.
“We have back-to-back to back games before the league tournament,” SLV Head Coach Nate Hill said. “We are going to have our hands full against (undefeated) Mount Madonna and Pacific Collegiate School.”
The Cougars might just have their hands full ensuring they have enough players. During the game, their bench was empty as only six Cougar varsity volleyball players were at the game.
Hill said some players have not been committed to the team.
The Cougars (13-4) are the defending Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champions but all four of their league losses came at the hands of Mount Madonna and Pacific Collegiate, the two schools ahead of them in the standings. In league, Mt. Madonna is 11-0, PCS is 12-2 and SLV is 6-4.
SLV played Gilroy and Soquel after press-time to wrap up the regular season. The Cougars will play for a berth in the Central Coast Section during the league tournament on Tuesday, May 3. The time and location of the game will be announced.
