Valley native wins scholarship
Sophia Forde, a San Lorenzo Valley resident, was one of two Cabrillo College students to be awarded the national Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Scholarship. The scholarship, valued at up to $30,000 over four years, is for her education at a four-year university.
Forde, who was home-schooled through high school, enrolled at Cabrillo in eighth grade. She gradated in fall 2010 with an associate degree in history and has been accepted at several University of California campuses, including UCLA. She is interested in studying urban planning.
Student named to dean’s list
Taylor West, of Ben Lomond, was named to the dean’s list at Southeast Missouri State University. He earned a GPA of 3.5 or better during the spring 2011 semester.
Cadet graduates military institute
Geoffrey M. Dinneen of Boulder Creek received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Virginia Military Institute. He is one of 277 cadets who graduated May 16.
SV boys headed to Boys State
The American Legion Santa Cruz Post 64 has selected five boys from Scotts Valley High School to attend the annual Boys State competition.
Boys State is a mock government run by high school-aged boys from across California. Jared Clark, Tyler Marshal, Scott Hunter, Andrew Guydish and Daniel Garcia will take part in the conference from June 18 to 25 at California State University, Sacramento.
