Middle school students compete in volleyball
Scotts Valley Middle School students Lexy Stevens, 13, and Sjea Anderson, 12, paired up for the first time to compete in the main beach volleyball tournament hosted by California Beach Volleyball Association. They took third place out of 25 teams in the 14-and-under age group last weekend.
Erlin throws well
Scotts Valley High alumnus Robby Erlin has improved to 5-0 for the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders. The 20-year-old lefty has experienced a quick rise through the minor leagues after being promoted from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Single-A team last season. Both teams are minor-league affiliates of the Texas Rangers.
Football camp on for next week
The 14th annual David Maze Football Camp will begin Monday, July 11, and run through Wednesday, July 13. The camp, a full-contact football tutorial for players ages 8 through 14, is run by Stephen Johnson, who was a part of the T-ball team that David Maze coached in the 1990s.
Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the San Lorenzo Valley High School football field, 7105 Highway 9, in Felton. Cost is $100 per player. Participants should take a mouth guard and cleats
The camp runs daily from 1 to 5 p.m.

Walters softball tournament on tap
The 15th annual Jim Walters Memorial Softball Tournament is just around the corner. The annual competition, which will be Aug. 6 and 7 at Highlands Park, 8500 Highway 9, in Ben Lomond, has a men’s division and a co-ed division.
