A local man could spend 15 years in state prison after he was found guilty of a laundry list of charges, including the Sept. 5 attempted robbery of a 65-year-old caretaker and his wife at their home at the Easter Seals’ Camp Harmon in Boulder Creek.
After a three-day trial by jury, Stephen Magee, 41, was found guilty of eight felony counts, including burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, criminal threats and dissuading a crime victim from reporting a crime and testifying at trial.
According to the prosecution, Magee assaulted the couple with a knife, demanded $500 and threatened to kill them if they did not comply. When they tried to call for help, Magee held the knife to the woman’s throat and threatened to kill her if she called the police.
When a neighbor responded to their cries for help, Magee fled. He was caught days later after an investigation by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.
While in custody before the trial, Magee asked associates to “smash” the victims and kill them to stop them from testifying, according to prosecutors.
Magee is being held in Santa Cruz and will be sentenced Oct. 11.
