Scotts Valley fire captain retires
Longtime Scotts Valley fire captain Andy Knox, 62, retired from the department last month.
Knox started his career as a volunteer at Scotts Valley Fire Protection District on Jan. 1, 1980, and was hired as a full-time firefighter the following year.
He was promoted to captain in July 1989 and served as a hazardous materials technician and acting duty chief.
Knox was named Firefighter of the Year by the department in 2001. He retired from the department July 5 after serving more than 31 years.
About 100 people attended a retirement party Aug. 5 at the Scotts Valley Community Center.
Knox lives in Soquel with his wife, Kate. He plans to travel to see the world in retirement.
Local named to dean’s list
Caitlin Powell, of Boulder Creek, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester at Scripps College in Claremont.
Powell earned at least an A- average in four or more classes in the spring semester. She was among 251 students out of 927 undergraduates to qualify for the dean’s list.
Bethany staff member joins Jessup
Dr. Sharon Anderson, a longtime leader at Bethany University before its closure this summer, has been hired as the San Jose site director for William Jessup University’s School for Professional Studies.
The San Jose campus offers degree-completion programs for working professionals at the Christian university.
Jessup is based in Rocklin.
