Some of the valley’s best youth soccer teams crisscrossed the state for tournaments in the last two weeks and the results – impressive.
The Scotts Valley/San Lorenzo Valley competitive travel soccer program is gaining momentum and turning out some of the top teams in some age brackets. In recent tournaments four SV/SLV teams placed in the top three against some of the toughest competition in the state:
At the Sacramento’s American River Goal Rush Classic the under-12 girls Valkyrie took third place. Then at the Santa Cruz Classic, the under-19 girls Pride took first place; the under-14 boys Thunder took second place; and the under-14 girls Pride finished in third place.
With the regular fall season nearly half gone, all four of the teams are at the top of their brackets, and the strong tournament showings highlight that the local SV/SLV soccer program is making strides.
One key ingredient to the success of the club is the commitment from the players and parents.
“The Thunder is more than a soccer team,” said under-14 boys Thunder Coach Ona Stewart and vice president of the SV/SLV Soccer Club. “These are all smart, athletic and focused boys who have collectively decided to commit 10 months a year on the practice field and travelling around Northern California to compete.”
Stewart went on to explain that more than half the team has been together since the team’s formation in 2006.
