A former Scotts Valley mayor and retired pastor of Gateway Bible Church recently published his fourth book, titled “Religion and Politics.”
The book, written by Glennon Culwell of Scotts Valley, calls upon Christians to fulfill a political responsibility that he says is called for in the Bible.
“The Bible says that all governing authority is from God; thus, people of faith have a biblical responsibility to be involved in government,” Culwell said in a statement.
Culwell, 85, has dedicated the book to his friend and former City Councilman Phil Liberty. The two ran together and were elected to the Scotts Valley City Council in 1986. Over the years, Culwell said, the two met regularly for coffee and lunch at Mollie’s Country Café, where they shared their love of politics and sports. Liberty died in 2008.
In the self-published book, Culwell deals with the First Amendment guarantee of the free exercise of religion and how people of faith should be involved.
The book’s foreword is written by Warren Willis, the director of the California School Project, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for California state senator in 2010.
“We need regular people to run, if we are going to turn this country around,” Willis writes about his experience seeking office.
Culwell has written three other books since 2006: “Death Goes to School,” “My Life in the Potter’s Hands” and “Princes Dressed Like Paupers.”
He will sign copies of “Religion and Politics” from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Oct. 16, and Oct. 30 at Gateway Bible Church, 5000 Granite Creek Road, in Scotts Valley.
The book is available for $8.95 from Amazon.com and other online booksellers.
