Man injured in house fire
A man received burns to his face after a fire started inside of his house on the 1600 block of Nelson Road on Monday, Oct. 31. It has been reported that the fire likely started at about 2:45 p.m. when the man tried to light a propane heater.
The fire, which significantly damaged the living and dining rooms, was contained within 10 minutes by firefighters. Crews from Scotts Valley, Felton and Santa Cruz responded to the blaze.
The house is past the bypass that was recently paved after a major rockslide blocked Nelson Road early this year.
Choir show to raise cash for schools
Sing For Your Life 2011, a show featuring 10 Santa Cruz County high school choirs, including San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley high schools, will take place Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church St., in Santa Cruz.
The choirs will perform in the ninth annual fundraiser produced by the Gold Standard Chorus. The concert raises money for school music programs. In eight years, the program has earned more than $45,200 for area schools.
Scotts Valley will perform at the 1 p.m. matinee and San Lorenzo Valley at the 7 p.m. evening performance. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and children age 12 and younger can enter free with a paying adult.

Valley job fair a success
The San Lorenzo Valley Chamber of Commerce has reported that the inaugural SLV Chamber Job Faire was a success. A dozen organizations were present to help more than 200 job seekers find work. Another dozen businesses notified the chamber of local job opportunities.
Sean Castagna of Santa Cruz Staffing said he was impressed with the quality of applicants he received and felt confident he would have a strong possibility of placing some of the people he met.
