The Scotts Valley Police Activities League Midget team concluded its spectacular playoff campaign with a 40-22 victory over the No. 2-seeded Milpitas Knights to capture the league championship.
The championship game was played in San Jose on Saturday, Nov. 19.
Scotts Valley’s run was a memorable one. The team swept through the regular season by averaging 32 points per game, while allowing opponents only 7 points per contest. In three playoff games, the Falcons outscored their opponents 116-22, shutting out the first two.
Head coach Jim Danels and the majority of his coaching staff were with the team for three years, guiding it to a 29-3 record in that span, including a PeeWee championship title in 2009.
“It was a lot of hard work and determination from the players,” Danels said. “Every day since we started at the end of July, from that day on, they knew the routine and what the goal was.”
Danels’ trademark this season was to ask the team after every game, “Are you satisfied?” The team always responded with a resounding “No!”
The team finished 17 weeks of practice and games with an 11-0 record, the first P.A.L. team to go undefeated in Scotts Valley history.
Along with the players’ grit, Danels credited hard work from his staff of seven coaches.
“We were all on the same page the whole year,” Danels said.
