Local soccer team beats SC stars
The Scotts Valley-San Lorenzo Valley under-12 soccer all-stars defeated all-stars from Santa Cruz at San Lorenzo Valley High School on Sunday, Nov. 20.
Zach Snider scored twice and Aaron Warner once to net the local team a 3-1 victory over their rivals. Seamus Ruiz-Earle was the team’s most valuable player for his effort at sweeper. The team had been together for only one week of practice.
The team is made up of Snider, Warner, Ruiz-Earle, Nick Koenig, Kaden Pryor, Ian Ross Mac Millan, Nate Alisago, Ben Kanter, Kevin Bonn, Jamesley Giblin, Dylan Townley, Kieran Ruf, Alex Jackson, Dan Johnson, Cole Jones and Devin Leontti. Coaches are Wes Koenig and Ryan Pryor.
Locals prepare for state meet
Runners from Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley high schools were on the trails this week in preparation for the California Interscholastic Federation cross country championship, to be held Saturday, Nov. 26, at Woodward Park in Fresno.
The San Lorenzo Valley girls team will send freshman Jessica Germany, senior Hyllery Hershberger and sophomores Jessica Jensen, Katrina Luque, Claire MacMillan, Anna Maxwell and Abby Sherman.
Representing the Scotts Valley girls will be two sophomores, Courtney Clark and Valerie Morrison; three juniors, Vanessa Fraser, Shannon Youmans and Olivia Gonzales; a freshman, Hayley Herberg; and a senior, Abby Utic.
Scotts Valley’s Scott Edwards qualified for the boys race, while the SLV boys team will run as a team, including sophomores Matt Abernathy and Jacob Hicks, juniors Stephen Bracken and Cody Johnson and seniors Landis MacMillan, Branden Caldwell and Nick Hicks.
SLV’s boys and girls are both ranked second in Division IV going into the race. Cody Johnson is ranked eighth and Nick Hicks 10th overall in Division IV. Maxwell and Fraser are ranked second and third in the state on the girls side.
