The Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley girls soccer teams are in the midst of preseason play and their hopes are high for the upcoming season.

The Falcons return to the field as the top dog as the defending Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champions look to ward off any and all contenders in an effort to repeat last season’s output.
All-league goalie Emily Johnson returns to direct the stingy Falcon defense that allowed only 13 goals last season and shut out 13 of their 20 opponents while scoring 47 goals of their own.
“We are returning a strong group of contributing players,” said veteran Head Coach Art Munoz who is now in his 12th season. “We had to shuffle some players around but we will be ready.”
Other key returners for the Falcons include Taylor Rohde, Madison Black, Ranae Malone, Kalynn Morano, Jordin Carlson, Emily Payne and Jessica Romeo.
The Falcons fell in a heartbreaker of the Central Coast Section playoffs last season to Valley Christian in the Division III quarterfinals.
“We’re getting ready for league,” said Munoz. “We are exposing these girls to some of the best teams in the state and it should really help us prepare for our league.”
Scotts Valley is currently 3-2-2 in the preseason and is due to begin league play against San Lorenzo Valley at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 at the Falcons home field.

San Lorenzo Valley

The Cougars finished last season at the bottom of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League standings ending up 4-11-1 overall and 1-10 in league play.
Offensively the Cougars never clicked as the team scored just 12 goals to their opponents 51 in the 16 games.
Third year Head Coach Heidi Romswinckel-Guise is assisted by Tina Fuller and Maria Esquivias.
The Cougars are slated to begin league play at Harbor High on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at home with kick off at 3:30 p.m.
