The Scotts Valley boys soccer team had its hopes for an undefeated league season dashed at the hands of the Santa Cruz Cardinals Jan. 13 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League as they were shut out 3-0.
The Cardinals stout defense limited Scotts Valley to a measly four shots on goal while pouring pressure on the Falcon defense with twelve shots of their own.
Falcon star goalie Brenny Hillan was injured in the first half and sat out the rest of the game with a leg injury.
During play, the Falcons were awarded two penalty shots that were both defended by Cardinal goalie Robin Johnson to secure the shutout.
Falcon forward Matt Seligman took both penalty shots. The second was a difficult save where Johnson dove to his left where he was able to clipthe ball with his outstretched hands to deflect the shot at the top right corner of the net.
“I tried to catch him to the left earlier in the game,” Seligman said. “I figured I would try to his right on that one, but he played it perfectly.”
The Falcons headed into the game with an SCCAL leading 3-0 league record and 6-3-2 overall with league wins over Aptos, St. Francis, and San Lorenzo Valley.
Scotts Valley and the Cardinals (2-0-1) are the only teams in the SCCAL with more than one league win at this juncture of the season. However, Harbor High is undefeated at 1-0-1 and has yet to face the Falcons.
“We are trying to keep our composure and treat every game like it could be our last,” said first year Falcon Head Coach Brian Terwillegen. “I felt the kids did really well but we have to regroup and step up our game.”
To date the Falcon boys have amassed the second most goals in league play (23) and shut-out four of their opponents throughout the season.
The Falcons will play next on Friday, Jan.20 at Harbor High against the Pirates. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
