Girls softball falls in opener
The Scotts Valley High School girls softball team fell hard in their league opener against Santa Cruz High on March 20, dropping several early scoring opportunities and eventually losing 9-3. It was the first time in the schools last four meetings that the Cardinals came out on top. The Falcons had the bases loaded with one out in both the first and second innings but Cardinal pitcher Daniele Whitesell struck one batter out and forced three dribbling hits to close out both innings.
The Falcons left seven runners on base in the first three innings.
In the bottom half of the fourth inning Danica Houseman ripped a two-run double to left-center field and Jackie Eicholz batted her in with a single to center field bringing the score to 4-3. The one-run deficit was as close as Scotts Valley would get.
Falcon Sigrid Holtrop went 3-for-3 on the day and teammate Michelle Ponos went 2-for-4.
Hole in one
Louise Goodenough of Los Gatos knocked in a 113-yard hole-in-one on the ninth hole at the Valley Gardens Golf Course in Scotts Valley on March 9.
The shot was witnessed by Lisa and Keith Anderson and Robert Goodenough. The 62-year-old used a hybrid five iron to sink the shot.
SV remains undefeated in lacrosse
The Scotts Valley High School lacrosse team soared past a young Soquel Knights team 21-2 on March 16. Scotts Valley scored 11 goals in the first quarter to the Knights 2. By half time the score was 17-2.
Spencer Fogelquist scored eight goals while Wesley Koenig scored four and added 3 assists. Collin Corbella had 5 goals and 1 assist.
Falcon goalie, Chris Martin, grabbed 10 saves for the game. The Falcons clobbered undefeated Carmel 11-7 on Mar. 20th after press time and play cross county rival Aptos on Friday Mar. 23rd.
The Falcons previously topped Pacific Collegiate School 17-8 on Mar.14
IOOF co-ed softball underway
The Steelheads picked up where they left off winning their first game, along with the Mount Hermon Banana Sluggers and the IH Torture who all started the spring season 1-0 in A-league play on March 11. The Mountain Mechanics and Sharks lost their season openers and start 0-1.
B-league is led by Monty’s Log Cabin and the Vagabonds who won their first games while the Bad News Beers, Outlaws and Coyotes suffered opening losses. For complete schedules and standings, go to ioofslv.teamopolis.com.
