A memorial is planned for April 28 for 62-year Felton resident Gwendolyn “Gwen” (Slovenko) Eddy, who died in Santa Cruz after a brief illness. She was 85.
Born in Chicago, Mrs. Eddy graduated from University of California, Berkeley, in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene.
She and her husband, John H. “Jack” Eddy, owned and operated Felton Rexall Drug Store from 1951 to 1976. They were married 45 years.
Mrs. Eddy, a devoted Cal football fan, attended games for 65 years, including multiple Golden Bear Rose Bowl appearances and the 1982 Big Game with Stanford, occasion of “The Play.”
An early builder of San Lorenzo Valley Little League, Mrs. Eddy was honored for her many years as its scorekeeper and announcer when the score booth was named after her. She also gave many years of volunteer service to Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries and to the board that owns the Felton library building.
Other interests included the San Francisco Giants, the Santa Cruz County Symphony, opera, travel, her pets, classic movies, bridge, puffins, English royal history, mystery and English romance novels, Monet paintings, cribbage, word games and watching “Jeopardy!”
She is survived by her children, David Eddy, and his wife, Joanna, of Carlisle, Pa., Bruce Eddy of Paso Robles and Leanne Eddy of Burlingame; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. “Jack” Eddy.
Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. April 28 at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., in Santa Cruz.
