Before facing Soquel High School, the San Lorenzo Valley girls softball team had been on a hot streak through the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League beating Aptos, Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley — scoring 20 runs while allowing only 3.
However, the team ran into some hot bats as they fell 6-4 to the Knights on April 16 during a Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League make-up game that determined first place.
The game originally started on March 27, but was interrupted by rain in the fourth inning with Soquel up 3-0.
According to SCCAL bylaws, the teams had to resume play with everyone in the same positions in the make-up game.
When play resumed, the Cougars made a valiant comeback. Down 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh, SLV drove in three runs and loaded the bases, giving them a final shot at tying the game before a ground-out ended the game.
With the win the Knights took control of first place in the SCCAL with a record of 4-1. The Cougars dropped into second place at 3-1 in league play 6-3 overall.
The Cougars play next at home against Aptos on April 19 after press time and will travel to Santa Cruz High on Tuesday, April 24 for a 4 p.m. contest.
