The Santa Cruz Mountains Surf Team, made up of athletes from Scotts Valley, San Lorenzo Valley and St. Francis high schools, earned a victory against Harbor High of Santa Cruz in its second contest of the season.
The SC Mountains team defeated Harbor 69-51 at the Hook in Capitola on Saturday, Dec. 8, in the team competition.
The cumulative score was based on two heats of boys short boarding and one heat each of boys long board, girls short board, girls long board and co-ed body board.
In addition to the team victory, Scotts Valley High surfer Evan Milnes placed second overall in co-ed body boarding.
The win was significant because the new SLV members of the team had never surfed competitively before the team’s first contest in October at Half Moon Bay.
Members of the team who advanced out of the first heat into individual rounds were Kaleo Bachiller in boys long board, April Martin-Hansen in girls long board, Devon Northcott in boys short board, Sophie Northcott in girls short board and long board and Rose Schroeder in women’s short board.
Other SC Mountains surfers who advanced were Luke Colosi from St. Francis in co-ed body board and boys long board and Reese Findley and John Ross, both of Scotts Valley, in boys short board.
The Saturday contest was the second of five in the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League season, which runs from October to March.
Conditions at the Hook on Saturday were 1 to 3 feet, with high tide and chilly fog early in the day, clearing to sunny and calm conditions during the later heats.
