For more than 10 years, the families of San Augustine Way, Purple Hills Court and Sageland Court have lined their streets with luminarias to light the way for Santa Claus every Christmas Eve.
The paper bags filled with sand and votive candles are placed by five or six families every year, according to resident Teri Goldwasser. Neighborhood children pull around wagons filled with luminarias, Goldwasser said, and place the lights about 3 feet apart.
This year, Goldwasser said, the neighborhood dedicated the luminaria display in honor of Diane Joyce, who died in November and was the founder of the annual tradition.
“It’s a tradition that we’re continuing,” Goldwasser said Dec. 24. “It’s making the neighborhood beautiful and lighting the way for Santa.”
The candles are lit at 9 p.m., after which neighborhood residents gather for hot cocoa and other sweet treats around a bonfire.
