Lacey Thompson (left) and Jeanette Fitzgearl show off their gluten-free cupcakes in their new Scotts Valley storefront.

An online cupcake business has found a place to frost in public with its first storefront in Scotts Valley.
Cutesy Cupcakes opened Dec. 17 in the Scotts Village shopping center at 245 Mount Hermon Road, Ste. V, four doors to the left of Safeway.
After graduating from the culinary program at Cabrillo College, Jeanette Fitzgearl and her daughter Lacey Thompson, along with Jeaneatte’s mother and Lacey’s grandmother Janeen Thompson, came up with the idea to start their own cupcake-making business.
“I’m happy to be doing something that I actually wanted to do,” Lacey Thompson said.
The first cupcakes were baked in a toaster oven, and as people began tasting the trio’s deserts, the orders started coming in.
Larger orders for weddings and other events soon followed, and the business grew.
The name Cutesy Cupcakes came about from the way that the owners think about cupcakes.
“Cupcakes are cute and very popular,” Fitzgearl said. “I like to make people happy and cause someone to have a great day.”
Although cupcakes are their trademark dessert, Cutesy Cupcakes also sell drinks and pastries, including gluten-free pastries.
As a Santa Cruz County company, everything at Cutesy Cupcakes is made from scratch. The trio said they are a huge supporter of local business, ordering most of their ingredients locally.
Some of their most popular cupcake flavors are choco peanut, lemon filled and fauxtess (their own version of a Hostess cake).
The business also features several special cupcakes intermittently, including hot cocoa and salted caramel (January’s flavor), s’mores (a summer flavor), and apple pie (a fall flavor).
Janeen Thompson said that the one thing that she hopes for the most in the new year is for Cutesy Cupcakes to become a household name and for everyone to know where they are located.
The trio said that they plan to go on the Food Network hit television show Cupcake Wars, though they are unsure as to when that will be.
