Cougars take Pirates for league victory
Led by 19 points from Billy Mullins and 12 from Lucas Trader, the San Lorenzo Valley High School boys basketball team doubled up Harbor High School 66-33 on Friday, Jan. 4.
The Cougars jumped out to a 19-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Trader was dominant on the glass, collecting 13 rebounds for the home team.
It was a bounce-back win for San Lorenzo Valley (6-8 overall, 1-1 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League), which fell to St. Francis 59-43 on Jan. 2.
The Cougars travel to Aptos on Friday, Jan. 11, where they will face the Mariners at 5:30 p.m. After Aptos, SLV plays at Scotts Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m.
 
Little League tryouts
Tryouts for Scotts Valley Little League will take place Saturday, Jan. 12, for players whose last names begin with the letters A through L. Players with last names starting with M through Z try out next Jan. 19.
The tryouts will be at the AAA field at Siltanen Park in Scotts Valley.
For 7- and 8-year-olds, tryouts both days will run from 8:30 to 9:50 a.m.; for 9-year-olds, 10 to 11:20 a.m.; 10-year-olds, 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.; 11-year-olds, 12:30 to 1:20 p.m.; and 12-year-olds 1:30 to 2:20 p.m.
If there is a rainout on either day, the tryout will be moved to the following day at the same time.

Runner commits to D-I university
Senior cross-country and track runner Cody Johnson will run for the University of Missouri in the fall.
Johnson, who sat out much of the 2012 cross-country season with an injured quadriceps, is the reigning Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and Central Coast Section champion in the 800-meter run, an event during the spring track season.
Johnson’s sister Taylor Johnson, a 2008 San Lorenzo Valley High School graduate, attended the University of Arkansas on running scholarship.
 
SC Warriors hit speed bump
The Santa Cruz Warriors dropped to 9-5 following a 96-78 loss to the Austin Toros during the first game of the NBA Development League Showcase in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The Warriors led by 18 points with a minute left in the second half, but were outscored 61-25 in the second half.
Taylor Griffin led the team with 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds, and Travis Leslie had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Austin was paced by Cory Joseph, on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, who scored a game-high 21 points.
 
SV soccer opens with loss
Despite two goals from Noah Carl, the Scotts Valley boys soccer team fell to Harbor High School in its league opener 5-3 on Dec. 19.
The Falcons gave up four goals to Harbor’s Max Ehle and dropped to 1-5-1 on the season and 0-1 in league.
They faced San Lorenzo Valley after press time Wednesday, Jan. 9, before hosting Santa Cruz High on Friday, Jan. 11, at 3:30 p.m.
