The public memorial service for two Santa Cruz Police Officers who were killed in the line of duty will be held in San Jose on Thursday.
The service for Sgt. Loren “Butch” Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler will be held Thursday, March 7 at noon at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. The Pavilion is located at 525 W Santa Clara Street in San Jose and driving directions are available at www.hppavilion.com/directions/directions.asp
Additionally, the service will be shown on the big screen at Kaiser Permanente Arena, 1040 Front Street, in Santa Cruz at noon.
The service was moved from Santa Cruz to San Jose because of the enormous amount of support and interest from the community, according to the department. There were not enough seats in one location to host the memorial service.
A memorial motorcade from Santa Cruz with personnel from criminal justice agencies, fire and emergency responders will precede the memorial service. It will begin at 8:45 a.m. from the Santa Cruz Police station and travel up Ocean Street from the beach area and onto Highway 17 to San Jose.
Baker and Butler were shot and killed by Jeremy Peter Goulet in Santa Cruz on Tuesday, Feb. 26 while investigating an alleged sexual assault case.
The memorial service will also be aired on the radio by KSCO AM 1080 and on local television stations. KSBW will stream a video of the ceremony via its website.
