Scotts Valley cycling ride scheduled
The 11th annual Mountain Charlie Challenge will be May 4.
The ride will begin and end at Skypark, 360 Kings Village Road. Riders can choose from the 50-kilometer, 100-kilometer and 100-mile rides, all with staffed rest stops and support vehicles.
Organizers will also offer morning and afternoon 10-mile family fun rides. The 10-mile ride through Scotts Valley will be guided and supported. Those who sign up early can reserve a free bike to use during the ride.
The event will also include live music, kids activities, obstacle courses, bike and helmet fittings, arts and crafts, artists and a barbecue lunch.
The event is sponsored by Scotts Valley Cyclesport, Back to Nowhere, Otoro Sushi, Lloyd’s Tire Service, Santa Cruz Bike Tours, Santa Cruz Sentinel, KPIG and Terry LaPorte Attorney at Law.

SLV beats Soquel
The San Lorenzo Valley High School baseball team scored eight runs in the first two innings and held on for an 11-9 win over Soquel High on Tuesday, March 19.
The Cougars were led by Jordan Peabody, Brian Robbins, Lucas Trader and Bryce Nunes, who each had two hits. Nunes and Peabody also each had two RBIs.
Kenny Cella was the winning pitcher after tossing five innings.
Local school hosts track and field
Santa Cruz High School will host the inaugural Santa Cruz Invitational Track and Field Meet on April 13.
The field events begin at 9 a.m., and running events start at 9:30 a.m.

Youth football launch
American Youth Football and Cheer’s Santa Cruz Mountain Cougars will launch its first team after Pop Warner competition ended in the valley in 2012.
The kickoff will feature sign-ups and a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 6 at Covered Bridge Park on Graham Hill Road, in Felton.
