The Scotts Valley High varsity football team will play Alice High School in Texas, Friday, Sept. 4, fresh off winning the annual Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League jamboree at Cabrillo College.
The upcoming contest is a rematch of last year’s game in Alice, where the Falcons were beaten 42-27 by the Coyotes in front of an estimated 10,000 fans.
The opening-season test comes after the Falcons showed their team speed on offense and defense by scoring 29 points to win the jamboree on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Scotts Valley mixed short and long passes with the option running game with quarterback Blake Jurich and running back Jake Bergman. Wide receiver Aldin Barrett also made a handful of catches in the warm-up and looks forward to a rematch with the Coyotes.
“I think we’re definitely ready,” Barrett said. “We’ve been thinking about it ever since last time we played there.”
Despite the jamboree win, head coach Louie Walters said the Falcons needed the following week’s practice to prepare for Alice.
“We need to get better if we are going to play with them,” Walters said.
The Coyotes are coming off a 43-26 opening-season loss to Friendswood Clearbrook, which dropped them to 0-1.
