The American Cancer Society Relay for Life will take place during a 24-hour period at Skypark in Scotts Valley this weekend.
The fourth annual Relay in Scotts Valley runs from 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, June 9 at Skypark, 360 Kings Village Road.
There were 25 teams including 305 participants signed up as of Monday, June 3 said Wendy Von Bach, an organizer and the team captain for Bay Federal Credit Union’s team. She said the all-night event has many activities planned, live music, contests and games for everyone who attends.
“The goal is for every team to have someone doing laps for every hour (during the relay),” Von Bach said. “Last year I walked for seven hours.”
Teams raise sponsorships before the relay and the money raised goes toward cancer research by way of the American Cancer Society. To keep the teams motivated during the relay, many activities are planned.
The opening ceremony and survivors lap opens the relay at 10 a.m. and the first of five bands will begin playing at 11 a.m. The bands include Von/Callaway Band, Jackie Rocks, Dress in Roses, Dog House Riley and Babiarz Scott Band. Other activities include karaoke, Zumba, rickshaw rides, a Mr. and Mrs. relay contest, fitness demos, 50-50 bingo a dunk tank and the Luminaria remembrance where attendees can light a candle to remember friends and family who have died from cancer.
