Letter: Community needs to stop dragging its feet on Skypark pump track

For the last two years I’ve promoted the idea of building a pump track in Scotts Valley (“Cycling pump track proposed for Skypark,” June 21, page 14) by letters to the Press-Banner, contacting the Scott Valley City Council, the Scotts Valley Parks and Rec Department and also talking to families that were on bicycles in the Skypark recreation area. When I inquired about where they lived, a huge response would be, “Skypark.”
One could assume that if there was a pump track in the Skypark area, many people would go to it without the use of a motor vehicle. It’s my understanding that virtually every one of the recreational features in Skypark met opposition; these include the soccer fields, the dog park, the basketball courts, the tennis courts and the children’s playground. Really, the children’s playground?
We as a society are always talking about doing things for the children. Let’s not make that empty rhetoric. Let’s build a pump track in Skypark. 
The City of Santa Cruz is in the approval stages of building a pump track on the Westside, so an “invasion” of Santa Cruzans driving up to Scotts Valley and parking in the Skypark neighborhoods to use the Scotts Valley pump track is pretty much nil.
