SV girls win, Cougars fall in polo
The Scotts Valley High School girls water polo team defeated Christopher 6-4 on Tuesday, Nov. 5 to earn a trip to the Monterey Bay League, Pacific Division tournament semifinals. Grace Ransler scored two fourth quarter goals to help the Falcons.
Meanwhile, San Lorenzo Valley fell 15-8 to Santa Catalina in the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division quarterfinals the same day. Suzan Steinberg had three goals in the loss to pace the Cougars.
Surfers open season
The Santa Cruz Mountains Surf Team fell to Santa Cruz High’s top-ranked riders in head-to-head competition in the opening contest of the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League season in Half Moon Bay on Sunday, Oct. 27.
Local surfers braved chilly conditions in their early morning heats at Half Moon Bay State Beach as Santa Cruz defeated SCM 80-45.
Scotts Valley surfer Brett Klotz, advanced to the semifinals in longboarding as did San Lorenzo Valley High sophomore, Sophie Northcott. Paul Colosi of St. Francis High made it to the finals in bodyboarding, representing the Santa Cruz Mountains team with a fifth place overall finish. April Martin-Hansen of San Lorenzo Valley High made it to the finals in women’s shortboard with a sixth place overall finish.
Softball teams compete in senior games
Three Santa Cruz Blues Breakers senior softball teams took third place and won bronze medals in the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah in October.
The 18-day games featured many events including softball and track and field. The Blue Breakers have been competing each years since 2000, but this is the first year, the team has fielded three age divisions. More than 60 teams competed from around the nation.
The 50-and-over team included team members Elaine Roswell, Jan Allington, Ruth Ingram, Liz Lopez, Susan Mitchell, Roxana Mehl, Linda Robinson, Lee Labrie, Debby Bratby, Linda Smart, Wendy McDonnell, Ruby Crawley, CR Ramirez, Maxine Brown and Diane Johnson, while coached by Scott Allington and Glen Brown.
The 55s included Alma Black, a manager of Scotts Valley, Suzanne Hastings, Michael Black, a coach of Scotts Valley, Barbara Birth, Judy Schmidt, El Cajon, Linda Harris, Brenda Cruz, Pat Winters-Baker, Sue Sogard of Scotts Valley, Peggy Redd, Devyn Langevain, Brenda Bell, Zelma Fennell, Colleen Thompson, Beth Davis, Bernadette Blood, Liz Morrison and Wendy Williams.
The 60-plus team was made up of Kathy Gilman, Chery Bremser, Sharon Wilson, Evelyn Jones, CR Ramirez, Wendy McDonnell, Diane Johnston, Linda Smart, Pat Winters-Baker, Linda Harris, CJ James, Julie Dixon, Peggy Reed, Tina Boston, Roxana Mehl, Zelma Fennell, Lynne Abraham, Mara Murphy, Laura Patterson and coach Stan Abraham.
