Scotts Valley barrels into playoffs with win over Santa Cruz

Senior running back Jake Rehnberg broke 2,000 yards on the season with a 43-carry, 275 yard effort, to lead Scotts Valley High School to a third consecutive blowout win heading into tonight’s Central Coast Section playoff game.
Rehnberg, who finished the regular season with a school record and Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League-leading 2,018 yards rushing, punched in three touchdowns in the Falcons 42-28 win over Santa Cruz High School in Santa Cruz on Friday, Nov. 15.
Willie Johnston added seven carries for 70 yards, and four catches for 74 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
Quarterback Jake Lobo was 9-for-20 passing for 123 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Senior Alec Turowski had five catches for 49 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Turowski and Griffin Curtis each had interceptions for the Falcons and Brady Botkin recovered a fumble to help the team improve to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Scotts Valley finished second in the SCCAL behind undefeated Aptos High.
They earned the No. 6 seed in the Division IV CCS playoffs and travel to Pacific Grove High School at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22 to take on Carmel High, the No. 3 seed.
The Padres have a high-powered offense that scored at least 40 points in nine of 10 games this season.
They are led by talented quarterback Connor Marden who threw for 2,194 yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions and running backs Holden Smith (1,112 yards and 19 touchdowns). Marden, a dual threat, also rushed for 815 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season.
Scotts Valley’s last playoff appearance was a first round loss to Sacred Heart Prep in 2011.
Cougars winless in league
The San Lorenzo Valley High School varsity football team finished the season with a 1-9 record, including 0-5 in SCCAL play after a 42-0 loss to league champion Aptos High on Nov. 16.
The Cougars were unable to get on the scoreboard in each of their last two games, a 42-0 loss to Soquel the week before, or against the Mariners.
Against Aptos, Kjell Johnson rushed eight times for 41 yards and caught six passes for 56 yards to lead the Cougars. Quarterback Isaac Newberry, under duress all day, was 11-for-29 for 110 yards and tossed five interceptions, against the stifling Mariner defense.
Jordan Peabody recovered a fumble for the Cougars, who finished the season with nine straight losses after an opening-season win over Marina High School.
