Lions Bowl all-star game this weekend
The Santa Cruz Host Lions Club will host its 8th annual Senior All-Star Lions Bowl football game that will feature players from San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley High School this weekend.
The game will be played at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14 at Cabrillo College.
The North team will be coached by Santa Cruz High School’s Jesse Trumbull and will include players from Scotts Valley, SLV, Harbor, Santa Cruz, and Soquel high schools. They will face a South all star team coached by Pajaro Valley High School’s Joe Gregorio and include players from Aptos, Monte Vista Christian, Pajaro, St. Francis and Watsonville high schools.
Santa Cruz Pop Warner and local high school cheerleaders will perform at halftime while food and drinks will be provided by the Lions Club with all proceeds benefitting local youth programs.
Scotts Valley wrestlers take 4th
The Scotts Valley High School varsity wrestling team finished fourth of 26 teams at the Peninsula Invitational in Half Moon Bay on Saturday, Dec. 7.
For Scotts Valley, Dominique Parrish took third at 120 pounds, Michael Sandoval took third at 132 pounds, Andrew Ramirez took third at 160 pounds, Doug Peyser pinned all three of his opponents in winning the 170-pound weight class and Baldan Dashiev took second at 195 pounds.
The Falcons next wrestle at the Webber Lawson Memorial Tournament at Fremont High School on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Rugby practice open to all comers
The Santa Cruz Redhawks youth rugby team will hold an open practice at Siltanen Park in Scotts Valley from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15.
Players ages 5 through high school are invited to attend, and are separated by age group.
Organizers recommend players who are interested to bring soccer or rugby cleats and a mouthguard. If they don’t have these items, they may still participate, but may need to sit out some drills.

Cougar girls soccer opens 2-0
The San Lorenzo Valley High School girls soccer team is off to a hot start, outscoring their first two opponents by a combined 10-0 score.
The Cougars opened the season with a 2-0 win over Pacific Collegiate High School on December 6. Then, behind five goals from Jessica Mittelbusher, the Cougars trounced Seaside High School 8-0 on Monday, Dec. 9 in Seaside.
The Cougars continue their season and host Pacific Collegiate this Saturday, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m.
Falcon girls soccer 1-2 in preseason
The Scotts Valley girls soccer team has opened the preseason with a 1-2 record after falling 7-0 in the opener to St. Francis of Mountain View on Dec. 4, topping Fremont 3-1 on Dec. 7 and falling to Salinas 2-1 on Dec. 10.
Against Fremont, the Falcons allowed a goal in the first minute, but scored three goals in 9 minutes in the second half. Emmy Koflanovich made it 1-1 in the 61st minute, Brittany Cartee scored the winning goal in the 65th minute and Koflanovich added a third goal in 69th minute. Claire Covert has seven saves in the win.
The Falcons play Kings Academy on Thursday, Dec. 12 after press-time and will travel to Watsonville at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14.
