The second contest of the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League season resulted in a win for the local Santa Cruz Mountains high school surf team made up of surfers from San Lorenzo Valley High, Scotts Valley High, and St. Francis High.
In team-on-team competition against Harbor High and Carmel High, the Santa Cruz Mountains surfers prevailed with a score of 62.5 to Harbor and Carmel’s 57.5.
Conditions at the contest were small but contestable. The contest was originally scheduled to take place at Pleasure Point, but because of the weak swell in town that day, the competition was moved to Manresa State Beach where the waves were larger.
San Lorenzo Valley High sophomores, April Martin-Hansen and Sophie Northcott made it through the team-on-team rounds to the semifinals level in women’s longboard and women’s shortboard respectively. St. Francis surfers, Shelby Robinette, Luke Colosi, and Paul Colosi also made it to semifinal rounds, and Paul Colosi qualified for the finals in bodyboarding, where he placed fourth overall.
In another recent surf contest, the Volcom Qualifying Series held in glassy, shoulder-high conditions at Pleasure Point on November 16, San Lorenzo Valley High sophomore, April Martin-Hansen, surfed her way through strong competition from both local and out-of-area competitors to make the finals in girls’ shortboard with a sixth place finish overall.
