The Scotts Valley High girls varsity soccer team defeated the visiting San Lorenzo Valley High 3-1 on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and the boys followed suit with a 3-0 win the following day.
The games were played at SLV as Scotts Valley home games. The wins put each Falcon team at 1-0 to open the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League season.
The Falcon girls came out in the first minute of the game and scored. Junior Taylor Raymond threw the ball in from along the right sideline, the ball soared across the face of the goal and sophomore Allie Carl headed the ball into the left side of the net, just past the San Lorenzo goalkeeper, Marlee Amos.
Scotts Valley scored again five minutes later with a cross field pass from Taylor Raymond on the right wing to sophomore captain Emmy Koflanovich, who drilled the ball into the net.
Fifteen minutes later, the Cougars got on the board on a free kick from a foul. SLV senior Synclaire Reyes took the 30 yard shot and sailed the ball over the defense and the outstretched hands of the Scotts Valley goalkeeper, Claire Covert, into the top right side of the net.
In the second half, both the Cougars and Falcons executed well with passing and a flexible defense.
The Falcons, however, pulled further ahead with a goal from Raymond. Koflanovich crossed to a sprinting Raymond, who rocketed the ball in the bottom right side of the goal, to put Scotts Valley up 3-1.
“We were connecting our passes more,” said Raymond after the game. “We’ve gotten more comfortable with each other as a team.”
