The Scotts Valley High School varsity wrestling team defeated undermanned San Lorenzo Valley 66-7 in both teams first Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League duel meet of the season.
The match took place at Soquel High School on Wednesday, Jan. 15. It was the first duel meet this season with a new format that included all schools in the SCCAL wrestling at the same venue.
San Lorenzo Valley sophomore Jed Kraft said he loves the new format.
“Only one school has to get out all the mats,” he said. “It’s way nicer.”
Kraft also likes being able to watch his competition in league and socialize with wrestlers from other schools, he said.
Kraft, wrestling at 140 pounds defeated Scotts Valley’s Nick Reyes 12-2. He was only one of two Cougars to win their match. Cougar David Jensen wrestling at 108 pounds defeated Scotts Valley’s Thor Oglesby 1-0 for the other Cougar win.
Addy Johnson, Domino Parrish, Michael Sandoval, Josh Blum, Maddy Volk and Andy Ramirez won by bye for the Falcons.
The Falcons who won defeated their counterparts by pin.
For Scotts Valley, Tristan Leonetti pinned SLV’s Sotero Torralta in the first, Doug Peyser pinned Patrick Brooks in the second, Baldan Dashiev pinned Conner Brooks in the first.
Scotts Valley’s varsity team will next wrestle at the Albany Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18, while SLV will travel to the Jim Root Wrestling Tournament at Prospect High School the same day.
