In an effort to raise funds for the Automotive Tech club at De Anza College, a group of students will be hosting a car show at the Canepa classic car museum in Scotts Valley.
The student-hosted event is set to take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, and will help future automotive technicians and engineers raise funds for scholarships and other activities, said Scott Tucker, Canepa service manager and part-time auto tech instructor at De Anza.
“It’s going to be student cars, (cars owned by) parents of students, and anyone that wants to show their car,” Tucker said.
For a $30 entrance fee, he said, anyone is welcome to display their car at the event. For everyone else, the event is free, though donations will be accepted.
Those cars selected to win prizes will earn their owners a student-made trophy, Tucker said.
In addition to the student car show, there will also be guided tours through the displays of rare and classic cars in the Canepa collection.
The students, Tucker said, are studying how to engineer and enhance high-performance engines.
The club, which he said has existed at De Anza since the 1960s, had typically held a autocross event on campus each year as a fundraiser in years past, but the construction of solar panels in the parking lots rendered that tradition as no longer an option.
Tucker said that his hope is that the new location for the car show will serve as a greater draw for gearheads and generate greater revenue for the club.
“This seemed like a good way to do it — Canepa is a good setting for it,” Tucker said. “I offered the facility because having it on their campus probably wouldn’t have drawn a lot of people.”
