Save Our Shores asks for litter-free Memorial Day at beach
Non-profit group Save Our Shores is offering Memorial Day beachgoers a trash bag and tips to keep Santa Cruz County sand clean. The groups issued a news release on Tuesday that read, “Trash left on the beach becomes pollution in the water and poses a dangerous threat to marine life, locals and visitors alike.”
On Monday from 1 to 4 p.m., volunteers will be out at Panther Beach, Cowell/Main Beach, Capitola Beach, Seacliff State Beach and Del Monte Beach to hand out free trash bags and encourage people to pick up after themselves.
On Tuesday, volunteers can join the group at Panther Beach, Cowell/Main Beach, Capitola Beach and Del Monte Beach from 9 to 11 a.m. for the Holiday Relief Cleanup.
Save Our Shores also offered five tips for visiting local beaches:
1. Pack all food and beverages in reusable containers and bring your own utensils.
2. Transport your food, party supplies, and personal belongings in reusable bags.
3. If barbecuing, make sure hot coals are safely disposed of, so they don’t burn others.
4. Avoid bringing Styrofoam items, as they often break into pieces that are difficult to clean up.
5. If you cannot take garbage home with you, find a trash can or dumpster to dispose of it properly.
